Understanding Its Role

The Panel on Accountability and Governance in the Voluntary Sector indicates that a key accountability of non-profit boards involves "ensuring the board understands its role and avoids conflicts of interest."

Public stewardship is central to your board's role. Your board must know its job and must do all it can to maintain public trust in order to effectively fulfill this stewardship role. By ensuring a common understanding of the board's role and responsibilities, your board will increase its effectiveness in fulfilling its role and responsibilities. By preventing conflicts of interest, your board will maintain the public's trust as it performs its role and responsibilities.
