Human Resources Challenge (exercise)

An important responsibility of your non-profit board is to ensure the organization has effective human resource policies and management systems in place to work towards its mission.


Challenge your awareness of your board's human resource accountabilities by identifying whether the following statements are true or false.
Because volunteers are not paid employees, the board does not need to set policies regarding the management of volunteers.
True False

Charities are exempt from employment standards legislation.
True False

As the legal employer of all personnel, the board is accountable for the organization's working conditions.
True False

If the performance of the Executive Director (or senior staff) is inadequate, it is the board's responsibility to discipline and, if necessary, fire this person.
